About Project

Stormwater runoff is the number one cause of polluted streams and rivers in Northern Virginia, which also are the sources of our drinking water. When it rains and snows, water runs off streets, driveways, yards and parking lots and mixes with pollutants, such as litter, fertilizer, pet waste, road salt, and auto fluids. These pollutants then enter storm drains on the street and are discharged directly into nearby streams.

The Northern Virginia Clean Water Partners represent 19 Northern Virginia local governments, school systems, independent water and sanitary sewer authorities, and local businesses that care about the quality of our waterways and the region's quality of life.

The goal of the Only Rain Down the Storm Drain social media campaign is to educate local residents and alert them about how they can do their part—simple steps they can take to stay safe by reducing the amount of pollution that reaches local creeks and rivers. Clean waterways also helps ensure a healthy environment for animals and families who enjoy natural scenery and water-related recreation.

The Northern Virginia Clean Water Partners program is coordinated by the Northern Virginia Regional Commission.
