About Project

For many middle school students, bicycles are a primary form of transportation and recreation, yet young riders often underestimate the importance of safe riding practices and helmet use. To address this challenge, the Florida Department of Transportation District Five Office of Safety created Bike Safety Education Day at Deltona Middle School, a student-powered safety campaign that combined hands-on instruction with creative expression to reinforce safe bicycling behaviors.
The key insight behind the program was that safety messages resonate more strongly when students help communicate them. Rather than relying solely on traditional presentations, the program encouraged students to become active participants in promoting bicycle safety.
During physical education classes, safety professionals delivered an engaging presentation on responsible riding practices, emphasizing visibility, roadway awareness, and the importance of wearing helmets. Students then participated in professional helmet-fitting sessions, ensuring each rider received a properly fitted helmet that met safety standards. By the end of the event, 165 students received free helmets, providing them with both the knowledge and equipment needed to ride safely.
To extend the safety message beyond the classroom, students were invited to participate in a bike safety art contest, illustrating examples of safe and unsafe bicycling behaviors. Thirty-three students submitted artwork that used bold colors, creative imagery, and clear safety messages to visually communicate responsible riding practices.
The contest transformed safety education into a student-led visual campaign, encouraging peers to think critically about their own riding behaviors while celebrating creativity and safe decision-making.
The program concluded with an awards celebration featuring community partners and a surprise visit from a local sports mascot, reinforcing community support for safer bicycling habits. By combining education, creativity, and hands-on safety resources, Bike Safety Education Day empowered students to become safer riders and advocates for bicycle safety within their school and community.
