About Project

The United Steelworkers union developed the Emergency Response Team (ERT). The ERT are deployed whenever a member of the union is injured on the job. This elite group of individuals arrive on the scene and assist either the injured member or in the case of a fatality, the family, with whatever they need. This could be anything from questions about health benefits or seeking mental health professionals.

Being essentially a first responder can be overwhelming so the experienced coordinators in a combined effort with Provost Umphrey developed the ERT Kit in attempts to make the initial conversation less awkward and painful. The binder has five sections and starts with basic information to get the conversation started. The other sections are more directed towards specific needs like attorneys, mental health and substance abuse.

Each section was test marketed through seasoned ERT coordinators. ERT coordinators are union members who volunteer for the position. They were excited to have materials to take with them to the member and/or family members.

With their help, these binders will be used throughout all the 13 districts throughout the United States as well as Canada. The binder is also printed by a Union printer and has the bug on the back signifying that. Even the binder itself was carefully chosen to be sure it was produced within the USA.

We can't change what happened but we can offer some support and a helping hand.
