About Project

One in Ten is a podcast by National Children's Alliance (NCA). The podcast’s title, is rooted in a sobering reality: one in ten children will experience abuse before their 18th birthday. Launched on May 2, 2019, One in Ten was created to engage the brightest minds across disciplines including science, law, medicine, public policy, ethics, and communications. Through in-depth conversations, the podcast translates research and professional knowledge into accessible insights for those working to protect children and support healing.
The trauma caused by abuse can fracture a child’s sense of safety and trust, disrupt relationships, and lead to long-term mental, behavioral, and physical health challenges if left unaddressed.
While the subject matter is often difficult, One in Ten is grounded in hope. Children can, and do, heal after abuse. With access to evidence-based, trauma-focused therapy and the presence of strong parental, family, and community supports, children are able to reduce trauma symptoms and regain healthy functioning. Children’s Advocacy Centers play a vital role in this recovery, offering coordinated, child-centered services that promote both healing and justice.
The podcast raises awareness of the realities of child abuse while spotlighting effective interventions and systems-level solutions. Its aspirational vision is clear: to move society from a reality of one in ten children affected by abuse to a future where zero in ten children experience it.
One in Ten is hosted by Teresa Huizar, CEO of the National Children’s Alliance. Teresa brings more than three decades of experience within the Children’s Advocacy Center movement, having served at every level, from developing psychoeducation curricula at a local CAC in Colorado beginning in 1993, to executive leadership roles at state, regional, and national levels. Since becoming CEO of NCA in 2008, she has successfully advocated for legislation and policy initiatives that strengthen responses to child abuse across local, state, and federal systems.
Through trusted leadership, expert voices, and science-driven content, One in Ten advances awareness, understanding, and actionable solutions, contributing to a safer, more supportive world for children.
